How to get to Rome from the airport

For most of us, arriving by plane will probably be the most convenient option, because it’s less time-consuming, and also cheaper if you get a good deal on your flight.

When you arrive, you will land on one of Rome’s two airports: Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport or Ciampino Airport.

Get to Rome from Fiumicino Airport

The Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport is located about 30 km to the West of Rome. Here are your options for how to get to Rome from the Leonardo da Vinci Airport:

Express train

Take a Trenitalia express train to Termini Station. The railway station is close to the airport and the trains run non-stop.

The Leonardo Express arrives every 15 minutes and it takes you to Rome in only 32 minutes. A ticket for Leonardo Express costs €14.00.

Taking the express train is the fastest option to get to Rome from Fiumicino Airport.

Express bus

Take a bus from one of the stations at Terminal 2 or 3. Just look for the signs saying Bus Station or Regional Bus Station to reach them. Buses usually leave every 30 minutes and there are several companies offering transfers:

Cotral

Buses leave from Terminal 2, Arrivals, and connect Fiumicino Airport to the Tiburtina Station, via the Termini Station. A ticket costs €7.00 if you get it on the bus (accepting only cash), or €5.00 if you get it from a newsstand, a tobacco shop, or other sales points from the airport or the two stations. This is the only company offering night rides.

Sit Bus Shuttle

Buses leave from Terminal 3, Arrivals, and connect Fiumicino Airport to the Termini Station and the Vatican area (2 Via Crescenzio). A ticket costs €6.00 and it can be bought online or at authorized sellers. If you choose to buy the round trip from the start, you get a discount. No night rides.

T.A.M. SRL

Buses leave from Terminal 3, Arrivals, and connect Fiumicino Airport to the Termini Station and Ostiense Station. A ticket costs as low as €6.00 and you can book online or buy them from the sales points available at Fiumicino Airport, Termini Station, and Ostiense Station. No night rides.

Fixed-fare taxi

Take a fixed-fare taxi. Taxies are available at the Arrival areas of Terminals 1 and 3. Authorized taxis are white, and have a TAXI sign on the roof. The fixed fares are set by the Municipality of Rome or Fiumicino, but they can change, even without any prior notice. Here are the fixed fares at this time:

  • Rome City Centre (within the Aurelian Walls): €48.00
  • Magliana – Parco dei Medici: €30.00
  • Tiburtina Station: €55.00
  • Ostiense Station: €45.00.

Taking a fixed-fare taxi from Fiumicino airport is the most convenient option for groups.

Rent a car

If you’re planning to only visit Rome, I don’t consider it necessary. The traffic can be quite hectic, parking spots can be difficult to find and public transportation is a much cheaper and handy option to discover Rome.

How to get to Rome from Ciampino Airport

Ciampino is a smaller airport, used mainly for charters, and European and national flights. It is 15 km to the South of Rome. Here are your options for how to get to Rome from Ciampino Airport:

Express train

Take the train from Ciampino’s train station. Ciampino is connected by buses to this train station. They arrive every 30 minutes and the ride lasts about 5 minutes. A but ticket can be bought while on board or from the agents available at the station for the low price of €1.00.

Once at Ciampino’s train station, you can get a ticket for about €8.00 (depending on the operator), and after a 15-minute ride, you’re at the Termini Station. However, it’s easier and less expensive to take a bus to Termini, directly.

Taking the express train is the cheapest option to get to Rome from Ciampino Airport.
