The archaeological excavations performed in front of the Athens City Hall have revealed an area found right by the old city walls.

Hellenic Parliament

Raised in 1842 as the palace of King Otto, the first king of Greece, the building became the headquarters of the Parliament in 1926. The transition wasn’t that smooth, as during the housing shortage of 1923, it was a shelter for the poor.

The building has a beautiful library, which you should visit.

Greek Evzone guard in Syntagma Square at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Sculpted in 1930 on the wall in front of the Parliament’s building, it depicts a dying soldier. The monument was done in the memory of all Greek citizens which have died during times of war, from the moment the Greeks won their independence to this day.

Presidential Palace and Maximou Castle

The old palace of king Constantine was designed by the Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller, whose imagination is behind many neoclassic buildings from the city of Athens. Today, this is the Presidential Pallace. Next to it, there is Maximou Castle, right by the official residence of the Greek Prime Minister.

National Theater of Greece

The beautiful neoclassical building of the National Theater in Athens was designed after Hadrian’s Library. The best shows in Greece take place on the stage of the National Theater.

the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the only stadium in the world built entirely from white marble

Panathenaic Stadium

This is the only stadium built in white marble in the world! Initially raised in the year 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games, it was later abandoned.  It was rebuilt to host the Olympic Games of 1896, the first edition of the Modern Olympic Games.

Zappeion

Located in the southern side of the National Gardens, the Zappeion is used as an exposition and conference hall today. In its past, the Zappeion hosted the Olympic Games from 1896 and 1906. Throughout its history, it also hosted many other events related to the Greek cultural identity, in general.

National Gardens

Designed in 1839 at Queen Amalia’s request, the vast and shady gardens were open to the public in 1923. Besides a large number of plants, the National Gardens are also home to a small zoo, a duck pond, and a children’s play area.

Pedion Areos

Although less impressive than the National Gardens, Pedion Areos is the largest park of Athens. As it is close to Exarchion Square, it is often used for protests, but also for cultural events, such as concerts or the annual book fair.
