Rome holiday itinerary, day 2: Walking from Vatican City to Trastevere

If you thought we covered a lot on the first day, think again! The second day of our Rome holiday was probably the toughest, but also the most amazing. We walked from Vatican City to Trastevere, starting early in the morning, and finishing after nightfall. However, we took plenty of breaks to enjoy the beautiful views over Rome, grab a bite or have a drink.

Rome holiday itinerary, day 1: Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

This year both Mathieu and I turn 30. For his birthday, in April, I wanted to do something special and go travel somewhere together. He had never been to Italy, which I love, so, in the end, I decided on a Rome holiday. This involved a lot of planning: there’s so much to see in Rome and there were so many places I wanted to show him! However, I allowed plenty of time to just enjoy the moment, stop for a drink or whatever else we felt like doing.

Skopje, our first stop in fascinating North Macedonia

It took us some time to leave the Rila Monastery and travel to Skopje, North Macedonia. Like on our arrival in the Rila National Park, there were works to expand the road, so we had to wait a lot for the machines to get out of the way or to move the recently cut trees out of the road.

Slowly, but surely, we made it, though. And we instantly started to appreciate the North Macedonian music. I forgot to mention this, but we only listened to what was on the radio on this road trip. And the music we found, regardless of the radio channels, was like the music from the ’80s!

Travel to Sofia, Bulgaria’s blissful capital

In the afternoon, after our magnificent stop at  Devetashka Cave, we continued to travel to Sofia Bulgaria‘s capital city.

I finally got to travel to Sofia Bulgaria! Ok, maybe I am a little too excited about this. But you see, I had passed through Sofia so many times before, on the way to Greece, but until this time I never actually got out of the car to visit anything. I’m really thankful to Elena and Adrian who were kind enough to offer to host the three of us while we were doing the Balkan road trip. Not only did we get a free and comfortable place to rest our heads for the night, but we also got the chance to catch up with old and dear friends.

I also appreciated having a newly-established local as our guide. Elena took us to some really cool spots in Sofia, spots which we might not have discovered on our own.

Let’s get into the details! Or you can check out the quick travel guide on Sofia at the end of the article.
