- Butrint is Albania’s most valuable archaeological monument, having withstood millennia of battles and natural disasters.
- It was founded by the Illyrians (ancestors of Albanians) in the 7-9th century BC, subsequently becoming a Roman colony, and then falling under the control of the Venetians and Turks.
- Butrint was settled by the Trojans, according to Virgil, but no evidence of this has been uncovered.
- Like other ancient cities, Butrint had developed into a walled trading metropolis with its own acropolis, whose remnants may still be seen today.
- The recovered city is a microcosm of almost 3,000 years of Mediterranean history, and its fortress from the 8th century BC reflects the city’s military might and symbolizes the once-thriving ancient city’s rich culture.
- Visit the Ancient Theater, Roman Public Baths, Aqueduct Remains, Baptistery, Cathedral, Mosaic, Lion Gate, and other attractions.
- Then we return to Saranda through Ksamil, where we halt for lunch in front of three little islands that appear to float in the Ionian Sea.
- Transfer to Saranda, followed by a walking tour of the city (ancient city walls remains, synagogue, mosaic, Lekuresi Castle). It’s time to relax. Return to the hotel or the deck.
